It can be incredibly stressful to see your child in pain. While we often associate arthritis with aging, it can affect children as well. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the most common form of chronic arthritis in children, affecting nearly 300,000 youth under the age of 18.
What Is Juvenile Arthritis?
JIA is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissues within the joints. While the exact cause remains unknown, researchers believe it may be triggered by environmental factors, such as a virus, in children who have a genetic predisposition.
The progression of the condition generally occurs in four stages:

Inflammation: The joint becomes inflamed.

Stiffness: The joint begins to stiffen.

Damage: The joint suffers physical damage.

Growth Changes: The joint’s growth pattern may be altered.
While some cases are mild, severe JIA can lead to significant joint damage, tissue issues, and problems with overall bone development.
Primary Types of JIA

Oligoarticular: The most common form, affecting only a few joints.

Polyarticular: Affects five or more smaller joints (typically in the hands and feet) and usually occurs on both sides of the body.

Systemic: A more severe form that can cause systemic symptoms and may persist into adulthood.
Common Symptoms
Signs of juvenile arthritis include:

Joint swelling, pain, and warmth to the touch.

Increased stiffness, often worse in the morning but improving by the afternoon.

Muscle weakness around the affected joints.

Growth discrepancies.

In some cases, children may experience high fevers or rashes.
Diagnosis and Treatment
To diagnose JIA, a physician will review your child’s medical history, conduct a physical exam, and may use imaging like X-rays or MRIs to confirm the condition. While there is currently no cure, there are effective ways to manage the disease. The primary goal is to minimize pain and preserve function.

Non-Surgical Care: This is the first line of treatment and often provides a comfortable level of function. It includes physical therapy, transitioning to low-impact activities, splinting, and medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories or corticosteroid injections.

Surgical Intervention: Surgery is rare and is typically only considered if non-surgical options fail to provide relief, with the goal of correcting joint deformity.
