CINCINNATI (WRKC) – The foot and ankle surgeons at OrthoCincy reported a rise in injuries in weekend warriors.
They reminded everyone that people are much more prone to injuries of the foot and ankle when they don’t warm up or ramp up activity.
Rick Kurzynski recently had surgery performed by Dr. John Linz to treat one of the most common concerns that comes from what often starts out as a pain in the foot and ankle area, and becomes much worse.
“I had a right Achilles tendon. We called it a shred, so it wasn’t totally torn, but it was frayed,” he said.
Dr. Linz explained how Kurzynski’s injury can happen.
“So, Achilles tendon ruptures are very common in 35 to 45-year-old men. Usually they are usually weekend warriors. So, they’ll sit during the week, work during the week, and then they’ll try to go play basketball or softball on the weekends. They don’t stretch out, we get tighter as we get older. And with that, they go and try to push off, suddenly playing a sport, and Achilles tendon ruptures because it hasn’t been stretched out at all,” Dr. Linz said.
He said it’s always about prevention if possible. So, he said not to play if injured, not to start at full speed, and to stretch out. Dr. Linz said stretching shouldn’t be limiting to playing time, but throughout the week.
