Dr. Sammarco is a fellowship trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon whose practice includes subspecialty care in disorders of the foot and ankle, musculoskeletal trauma and general orthopaedics.
Dr. Sammarco was raised in Cincinnati and graduated cum laude from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in 1989. During that time, he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He attended the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio where he received his Medical Degree in 1993. Dr. Sammarco completed a five-year orthopaedic residency at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and won the award for Best Resident Research during his final year in 1998. He completed a one-year Clinical and Research Fellowship in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland prior to starting his practice in Cincinnati in 1999.
Dr. Sammarco is highly involved with several national orthopaedic societies. Dr. Sammarco is actively involved with the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and is an editor for AAOS Now, the most widely read orthopaedic publication in the United States. He served as Chairman of the Publication Education Committee until 2014. He has also served as a member of the AAOS Publications Committee and the Council on Education. He is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) and has served Chairman of the Young Physicians Committee and Chairman of the Electronic Media Committee. He has served the AOFAS on the Publications and Program Committee.
Dr. Sammarco is an active researcher, clinical and scientific writer and instructor. He has been the director of two fellowships in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery. He lectures locally, nationally (AOFAS, AAOS, COS) and internationally. He has been visiting professor in Australia, France, Greece, Colombia, Canada and India.
He serves as a reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Foot and Ankle International and The Journal of The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and others. He is a former Associate Editor for Foot & Ankle International and he edited an edition of Foot and Ankle Clinics of North America. He authored chapters in major orthopaedic and sports medicine text books and has published over 50 articles and chapters in orthopaedic journals and textbooks.
When not working, Dr. Sammarco enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He enjoys playing and listening to all types of music, and is an avid outdoorsman enjoying cycling, skiing, canoeing and kayaking, fishing and archery.
