A Promising Future for Joint Replacement

"I truly think this is the next evolution in joint replacement," Dr. Matthew T. Hummel says of robotic technology. Dr. Hummel is currently performing MAKOplasty, a partial knee replacement using robotic technology. In fact, Dr. Hummel expects FDA approval soon for the MAKOplasty total knee replacement and is training to master hip replacement with these high-tech tools as well. "We're always looking for better technology to make our implants better fitting, with better alignment," he says.
While Dr. Hummel notes that minimally invasive techniques are recognized for reducing post-surgical pain and recovery time, the big advantage of MAKOplasty robotic-assisted surgery remains the longevity of the implant and improved quality of life for his patients. He prefers telling his patients that a replacement will last 15-20 years, rather than 10-15 years, thus reducing the need for more complicated, higher-risk revision surgeries.
"If I can get an original knee to last 20 years and optimize it, then I have done both the patient and medicine a huge service," Dr. Hummel says.
