MATTHEW T. DESJARDINS, MD

MATTHEW T. DESJARDINS, MDFor six years, Dr. Matthew T. DesJardins has used platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to treat patients with nagging problems such as tennis elbow, hip bursitis, and knee tendinitis. Because the injection procedure has been successful for 75 percent of these patients, Dr. DesJardins is recommending the treatment earlier - and for ligament and muscle problems as well. PRP for arthritis and other age-related ailments is on the horizon.

Why is PRP popular?

Biologic treatment: PRP involves removing platelets from a patient's blood sample and injecting them into the injured tissue. This process stimulates the body's natural healing process. No foreign substance is injected into the body.

Easy for patients: A simple blood draw followed by an injection of local anesthesia is all the poking and prodding required. No general anesthesia is needed. The entire process takes two hours.
