MATTHEW T. DESJARDINS, MD

MATTHEW T. DESJARDINS, MDPerhaps you've heard of PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma - a treatment Dr. Matthew T. DesJardins has been using for six years to treat patients with nagging problems such as tennis elbow, hip bursitis, and knee tendinitis. But what else should you know about PRP? Dr. DesJardins says there are a few things many people don't realize.

There are very few side effects. Post-procedure pain can be expected for a week or two, "but the likelihood of unexpected side effects is very low," Dr. DesJardins says. PRP is done with ultrasound guidance, so there is little chance of damaging other structures around the tendon, ligament or muscle.

In addition, it is cost-effective. PRP is an office procedure, thus saving the costs associated with a surgical center or hospital. While it is considered experimental by most health insurance plans, many patients use health savings accounts to cover the expense. "Compared to other medical procedures, physical therapy, and medications or other medical treatments, it's fairly cost-effective," Dr. DesJardins notes.

Finally, there can be quicker healing with PRP. Results are not immediate, but healing times are typically faster than surgical treatments.
