Should I Send My Child to a Sports Training Clinic?

MATTHEW T. DESJARDINS, MD

MATTHEW T. DESJARDINS, MDMatthew T. DesJardins, M.D., is a team physician for Northern Kentucky University and Cooper High School. He advises several youth sports leagues in Northern Kentucky and serves on the Sports Medicine Advisory committee to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

When asked recently about sending a child to a sports training clinic, Dr. DesJardins said that for younger athletes, you can skip the sports training clinic.

"In the under-12 set, they are completely unnecessary. Kids get hurt more, the burnout rate is higher, and they don't necessarily become better athletes," Dr. DesJardins says. Better to focus on having a good time, skill acquisition, learning to work as a team, appreciating physical fitness and acquiring sports skills for leisure, rather than on competition and travel.
