What Are the Advantages of Internal Brace Augmentation?

NICHOLAS T. GATES, MD

According to Dr. Nick Gates, the advantages include a more reliable repair which leads to an accelerated rehabilitation program. It is also anticipated that long term outcomes will be improved by the technique.

With more typical techniques, patients often wait six weeks or more before physical therapy begins. With the internal brace augmentation, Dr. Gates is allowing patients into physical therapy and off crutches within two weeks after the repair. Patients are now challenged to rehabilitate more aggressively and earlier. This certainly leads to a quicker return to activities of daily living, and is now leading towards the potential for more rapid return to athletic activities.
