CINCINNATI (WKRC) – As the holiday season approaches, many people are concerned about weight gain. While the average person gains only one or two pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, the issue is that these pounds often remain. To combat this, experts suggest increasing physical activity. Aerobic exercise and weight training are both effective in reducing weight gain during this sedentary season.

Dr. Amelia Wiggins, an orthopaedic surgeon at OrthoCincy, emphasized the benefits of weight training, stating, “Any weight-bearing activity and strength training will help to build your bones.” Additionally, weight training aids in weight management because fit muscles burn more calories at rest.

Luke Bryce, a physical therapist at OrthoCincy, advised, “The most important thing is just making sure people are hitting the minimum activity guidelines. For most adults, that’s 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week and to do activities designed to improve strength two to three times a week.”

Another factor contributing to holiday weight gain is increased snacking on high-calorie foods and drinks, such as alcohol, eggnog, nuts, and chocolate. For those experiencing pain or limited range of motion, OrthoCincy’s physical therapy team is available to help.
