CINCINNATI (WKRC) — Movement might be the key to alleviating back pain, according to medical experts. Angie Scott, a back pain patient, shared her experience, saying, “It’s an aching pain and tightness, when I move a lot at night when I get stiff, then I have pain but the more I’m up and moving around the better it gets.”

Scott has found relief through specific exercises recommended by her physical therapist, Caitlin Yauch of OrthoCincy Physical Therapy. “The exercises that they have shown, have helped,” Scott said.

Yauch emphasized the importance of three key strategies for those who sit for extended periods. “I think most people have a weak core and don’t even realize it and that definitely helps support the spine,” Yauch said, highlighting the need for core strengthening.

Stretching is also crucial, Yauch noted. “A lot of people end up with tight hips especially people who sit all day for work – so stretching the hips, stretching the hamstrings, stretching things that get tight when you sit all day, definitely helps,” she said.

Finally, Yauch pointed out the significance of proper movement techniques. “Some people have a strong core, they just need to be taught how to move correctly and tighten the core as they squat or sit down or lift something, sometimes it’s strong it just needs retraining of how to work properly with certain movements,” she said.

For those experiencing back pain from prolonged sitting, consulting a physical therapist may provide valuable guidance on effective exercises and movement techniques.
