CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Local physical therapists say this is the time of year they see a lot of overuse injuries.

Overuse injuries can come from a number of things according to the physical therapy team at OrthoCincy.

“Through the years of working concrete, everything just wore out, my back my hips, which I’ve had two hip replacements and this knee I’ve had it for nine years on and off wearing down,” said Perry May at the Highland Heights OrthoCincy.

“Overuse injury is basically just repetitive strain on tissues on our body that just become irritating. Often time, they happen because we do a lot and use a body part a lot and then don’t give it adequate rest,” advised physical therapist Maria Beane.

The team at OrthoCincy says you can rehab what hurts and help build up muscles around an area thet’s been used too much but part of rehab is also learning how to do some things differently so you don’t keep reinjuring the same area.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean completely rest that body part, but use it in a different way,” suggested Beane. “If you’ve been doing a ton of throwing, maybe let’s do some strength training and lifting, so we take stresses off the shoulder and elbow with the throwing, but you’re still using that body part, so relative rest is a principal that we use.”
