CINCINNATI (WKRC) — As temperatures rise and more people head to the pool, a local shoulder specialist is warning swimmers about the risk of injuries. Dr. Trevor Wilkes, a shoulder specialist at OrthoCincy Eastgate, said swimming injuries often result from “mostly overuse, and sometimes bad stroke mechanics, so people that don’t have a good background in swimming, and then finally imbalances because you can do the same movements with swimming so repetitively, you get those overuse and muscle injuries that have to be corrected with your dry-land training.”

Dr. Wilkes advised swimmers to engage in dry-land training to prevent injuries. “Great exercise, just got to make sure you are doing your good shoulder care and preventative work,” he said. For those unsure about how to proceed with such training, Dr. Wilkes recommended consulting a physical therapist before shoulder pain worsens.

OrthoCincy has recently expanded its physical therapy services at several locations, providing more options for those seeking professional guidance.
