Total Knee Replacement
About Us
At OrthoCincy, we prioritize techniques that promote faster recovery and less pain. Muscle-sparing total knee replacement is an advanced surgical approach designed to access the knee joint without cutting through the major muscles or tendons surrounding it. Our fellowship-trained surgeons will evaluate your condition to determine if you are a candidate for this muscle-sparing technique.
What is Muscle-Sparing Surgery?
Muscle-sparing surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that replaces the damaged joint without cutting the quadriceps muscles or tendons. By sliding the muscles aside instead of dividing them, it significantly reduces tissue trauma, leading to less post-operative pain and a much faster recovery.
Benefits of Muscle-Sparing Surgery
- Quicker return of knee function: Patients who undergo this procedure often get muscle strength and control back more quickly than patients who have had a traditional total knee replacement.
- Decreased post-operative pain: This is a result of the smaller incision and the fact that the incision stays out of the important quadriceps muscle/tendon group.
- Fewer Complications and Shorter Hospital Stays:
Minimally invasive techniques often correlate with reduced blood loss and a lower risk of infection. Because the incision is smaller and the deep trauma is minimized, the body's stress response is often lower. Consequently, many muscle-sparing knee replacements can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a very short hospital stay.
Am I a Candidate?
Ideal candidates for muscle-sparing knee replacement typically suffer from severe knee arthritis, injury, or osteonecrosis, but maintain strong quadriceps muscles, good bone structure, and minimal joint deformity.
Ideal candidates typically have:
- A healthy body weight
- Minimal deformity in the knee
- Good preoperative mobility and strength
- No history of extensive prior knee surgeries
How is the surgery performed?
Robotic-arm assisted, muscle-sparing knee surgery—like the subvastus or quadriceps-sparing approach paired with systems like Mako SmartRobotics or ROSA Knee—preserves healthy tissue by working around muscles instead of cutting through them.
